The skin protects the body from external infections caused by fungus, viruses and bacteria. People can develop certain skin conditions due to environmental or genetic factors or a combination of both. Below are among the common conditions that are managed and treated at KIMS Bahrain Medical Centre. Eczema is a chronic and inflammatory condition that affects both children and adults. It causes the skin to become dry and cracked and can lead to inflammation which causes itching and bleeding. Triggers include low humidity, detergents, pollen, mold, stress, dust and weather changes. Another chronic and inflammatory condition, psoriasis, is the rapid buildup of new cells on the surface of the skin resulting in scaling, redness, dryness and itchiness. It affects all ages and is not contagious.

Acne is a skin condition that affects teenagers and adults. Skin is in a continuous process of shedding dead cells, and pores continuously secrete sebum along with bacteria. When pores get blocked, they become inflamed and result in acne which can be in the form of blackheads, whiteheads or pimples.  Warts are caused by viral infections and they are contagious. They affect both children and adults but are more common in children. They are characterized by bumps or rough patches that appear anywhere on the skin and needs treatment. Skin tags are small, pouch-like bumps that hang on the skin and are harmless mostly. They increase with age and can appear on the eyelids, underarms, neck or other areas.

Keloids are scars that grow beyond wounds in certain people. Keloids can occur at injection site, insect bite area or a surgical scar. Keloids are more likely to affect people with darker skin. They appear mostly on the upper body such as the ear, chest or back.

Vitiligo is an autoimmune skin condition that can affect anyone at any age. White patches start to develop on the skin as a result of a loss of skin pigment and can spread to the rest of the body. Freckles appear on the skin due to exposure to UV radiation from the sun. People with fair skin are more prone to getting freckles which manifest themselves in light brown spots.
