Kidney Stones! Have it or no? Keep it under check.

When it comes to vital organs like Kidneys it is important to run regular checks, especially when you have conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease or a family history of kidney disease. If you have any of the aforesaid conditions, but no kidney disease as yet, then your doctor might advise you to undergo a tests every year. 

Also, with changing food patterns and lifestyle, people these days are more prone to develop kidney stones. Those who have suffered from it at any point in life know how painful it is and those who haven’t yet should consider themselves fortunate.

Reflecting on kidney stones, Dr. Ashish Kalra, Consultant - General Surgery at KIMS Bahrain Medical Centre (KBMC) says: “Kidney stones are most likely to occur between 20 and 40 years of age. There are both surgical and non-surgical solutions to treat kidney stones. But detecting it at the earliest is essential as it helps us avoid further complications.”

Kidney stones are solid masses made of crystals. It usually develops in the kidneys. But it can be formed anywhere in the urinary tract which includes ureters, bladder, and urethra, in addition to the kidneys. Kidney stones can be caused by various factors like dehydration, obesity, high-protein, salt or glucose diet, hyper parathyroid condition, gastric bypass surgery, inflammatory bowel diseases that increase calcium absorption, etc. If you or your family have a history of kidney stones, the risk has been proven to increase.
